Lesson 04 of 6 · The Traditions

Zen: just sit.

The tradition of shikantaza — nothing added.

Voice: Zen tradition · Zen · 4 min read

"Sit, just sit. What is added is not the practice."

Attributed to Dōgen

Zen calls it shikantaza — just sitting. No mantra. No counting. No visualization. You sit down, you sit up straight, you notice you are alive, and you keep sitting.

Thoughts will come. You do not chase them or push them away. You are the sky; they are weather.

Try it now

Sit for seven minutes. Do not count. Do not follow the thoughts.

Worth remembering

  • ·Nothing needs to be added.
  • ·Thoughts are weather, not you.
  • ·The posture itself is the teaching.
